Volunteering Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council have just completed a 12-month project facilitating the development of a unique and exciting volunteer initiative, the Rockhampton Region Volunteer Organisations Active in Disaster (VOAD) Consortium. The VOAD brings together rural and urban Volunteer Involving Organisations (VIOs) from across the Rockhampton region, all with one purpose, stepping up to volunteer during disasters. The community groups are also excited about the prospect of being able to contribute to the long-term recovery of their community after disaster.

The Rockhampton Region VOAD came together for a breakfast and disaster exercise on Saturday 6 March to explore ways they could work together to respond and recover from disasters.

The project is finishing however the VOAD continues to gain momentum and VIOs will work closely with Rockhampton Regional Council to identify how they can best assist the community during times of adversity.

Volunteering Queensland has welcomed the opportunity to be embedded in Council's disaster management unit and to work closely with volunteer groups from around the Rockhampton region.
