In partnership with Volunteering Queensland, Queensland Secondary Schools, Special Schools and Alternate Training Programs can offer their Year 11 and 12 students the chance to undertake a nationally recognised Certificate I, II or III in Active Volunteering through the Students As Active Volunteers Initiative (SAAVI).
Brittany is one of the students completing a CHC24015 Certificate II in Active volunteering.
As a Year 11 student from Everton Park State High School, Brittany takes part in multiple volunteering initiatives. She volunteers with the Kindy Kapers program at her local PCYC, as well as helping to provide food to people experiencing homelessness with the Mobile Food Van in Fortitude Valley.
Brittany further observed that many people experiencing homelessness were in desperate need of blankets and warm clothing and has started collecting donations and handing these out in Fortitude Valley. She used her mother’s Facebook to involve family and friends, and has even had help from complete strangers. Because of her work, she has collected and donated over 200 blankets.
As a SAAVI student, Brittany completed her required 30 volunteering hours in a single term, and now aims to achieve 100 hours by the end of the school year. She told us that she loves her volunteering work because it makes her feel proud, and added: “I like to know I’ve made a real difference in someone’s life.”
Doria West, Everton Park State High School teacher who delivers SAAVI, said “Kids are very receptive to the course and are enjoying their volunteering. The students are gaining great experience, developing relationships and some students may even gain employment.”
The dedication that Brittany has shown over the course of several months and her love for volunteering, have earned her the title ‘SAAVI Student of the Term’. When Brittany finishes her schooling she wants to continue to help individuals experiencing homelessness.
