Volunteer management

Futuring volunteer leadership & programs

This report provides findings from our Futuring Volunteer Management Forum, May 2013.

This forum brought together 84 volunteer managers from South-East Queensland to assess the changes affecting local volunteerism and the strategies required to keep the sector relevant over the coming years.

Each volunteer manager provided their thoughts on trends, challenges, best practices, and necessary critical changes.

Challenges affecting volunteering

  • Volunteer and position mismatch
  • Limited resourcing of programs

Best practices for recruitment & retention

  • Volunteer recognition
  • Volunteer inclusion
  • Using online resources and websites

Critical changes necessary for a bright volunteer management future

  • Increased volunteer training opportunities
  • Increased promotion of volunteering
  • More networking events for volunteer managers

The findings indicate that South-East Queensland volunteer managers are experiencing a range of complex and emerging challenges which are consistent with wider national and international developments in volunteering.

Interestingly, findings suggest that certain ‘typical’ issues and conventional best practices remain important.

When preparing for changes expected over the coming years, the integration of both new and conventional approaches is necessary.
