Homeless Connect Volunteer Role Descriptions

Please read the role descriptions below to make sure you are able to fulfil the requirements prior to registration.  

Requirements

  • Medium-weight lifting will be required in all roles. 
  • Pack-down at the end of the event is a requirement of most roles. 
  • Detailed role duties will be supplied closer to the event. 
  • You must be available for the entire shift. 
  • You must be 18+ to register unless you are with a school. 
  • Volunteers are automatically allocated the role they register for, however, flexibility is needed should volunteer role requirements change closer to or on the day. 

Bump-in Assistant

Day before the event - Wednesday 17 November, 2021

BCC Bump-in Assistant
Shift time:8:30am - 3:30pm

Assisting with bump-in is an important role ensuring the venue is correctly set up and ready for guests to arrive on event day.

This is a worthwhile and enjoyable experience, suitable for individuals, corporate groups and schools. Roles are varied and duties may include:

  • Sorting second-hand clothing
  • stacking items on tables
  • pre-packing grocery bags, or
  • sorting pallets of mixed donated cans and other non-perishable items.
Bump-in Assistant
Shift time:8:30am - 3:30pm

Assisting with bump-in is an important role ensuring the venue is correctly set up and ready for guests to arrive on event day.

Other set-up requirements may include:

  • Medical centre
  • Service provider stalls and marquees
  • Volunteer room, and
  • Cloakroom.
Kitchen Hands Bump-in Day
Shift time:11:15am – 2:00pm
Rapid Relief Team

Kitchen Hands work under the supervision of Stephen Taylor from Rapid Relief Team.

This role includes preparing and serving lunch for volunteers and keeping the kitchen and dining areas clean and tidy.

Some medium-weight lifting is required in this role. Any other duties will be provided by Stephen Taylor.


Event day roles

BCC General
Shift time:various times

Brisbane City Council staff will be in a variety of roles as directed by Chris Merder (Safe Communities Officer – Brisbane City Council). These roles include food store assistants, clothes store assistants, general assistants, bus drivers etc.

Bus Attendants
Shift time:2 shifts available: 11:30am - 4:30pm, 7:00am – 12:00pm

Bus attendants assist guests with their luggage on and off the bus, answer questions and ensure guests have an enjoyable day from beginning to end. Bus attendants also record statistical information (e.g. departure/arrival times, number of passengers getting on and off at each stop).

Cloakroom Attendants / Porters
Shift time:7:45am - 3:30pm

Cloakroom attendants work in the cloakroom, where guests and volunteers are able to store items during the day.

Porters work with the cloakroom attendants by assisting guests with their belongings between the cloakroom and the buses. Porters also engage with guests at the food and clothing stores throughout the day offering to store guest’s items in the cloakroom.

Cloakroom attendants and porters assist with packing down the cloakroom area and other areas across the venue.

Clothing Store Assistants (including shoes and lingerie)
Shift time:7:30am - 3:30pm

The clothing store is divided into general clothing, shoes, workwear, and lingerie and is run by The Salvation Army.

The clothing store assistants help guests select shoes/clothing and keep the tables stocked throughout the event.

Clothing store volunteers assist with packing down the clothing store and other areas across the venue.

Food Store Assistants
Shift time:8:00am - 3:30pm

This role involves directly interacting with guests by providing pre-packed bags of non-perishable food and toiletries.

Food store volunteers assist with packing down the food store and other areas across the venue.

Front of House Attendants
Shift time:6:15am – 2:15pm

Front of house attendants manage the entrance to the venue and issue colour-coded wristbands to all guests, volunteers and service providers.

Front of house attendants arrive early to coordinate the volunteer sign-in area and manage ID verification. Volunteer shifts commence at 6.15am, prior to the event start time. Guests begin entering the venue from 8:30am.

General Volunteer Assistants
Shift time:2 shifts available: 6:30am – 12:00pm, 11:30am – 4:30pm

General volunteers assist wherever required. This role may include supporting the team by filling shifts, supporting the COVID-safe guidelines, covering volunteers for lunch breaks, managing queues, giving directions, front of house duties, delivering food, assisting photographers with release forms, general tidying and assisting team leaders.

Another important part of this role includes interacting with guests, helping guests plan their day and providing information about venue layout, ensuring guests maximise the services and activities on offer.

This role requires confident, friendly and adaptable volunteers.

Volunteer Room Assistants
Shift time:2 shifts available: 6:00am – 11:30am, 11:00am – 4:30pm

Volunteer Room Assistants work in the volunteer cloakroom, where volunteers are able to store their items, have refreshments and utilise a quiet space if they need a break.

Key duties include greeting volunteers, distributing t-shirts and name tags, restocking refreshments, tagging volunteer bags and helping volunteers with any queries.


Specialised volunteer roles

Entertainers
Shift time:as required between 9:15am to 2:00pm

Entertainers share their talent with the guests at Homeless Connect in a 30-40 minute set.

Type of performances and tech requirements must be confirmed with Brisbane City Council.

Hairdressers/Barbers
Shift time:8:15am - 2:15pm

A haircut and a shave can make an incredible impact on our guests self-esteem. Being treated with kindness and pampered is deeply meaningful to guests. Haircuts and barbering services will be provided all day by volunteers. No hair washing or colouring will be required.

You must be a qualified hairdresser or barber and supply your own tools.

Medical and Allied Health Professionals
Shift time:8:00am - 2:30pm

Volunteer medical and allied health professionals are an essential part of Homeless Connect. Professionals include:

  • General Practitioners
  • Optometrists
  • Dentists
  • Podiatrists
  • Audiologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Massage Therapists
  • Ambulance Services
  • BCC Immunisation Team
  • Micha Projects with their pop-up COVID vaccination clinic

Requirements:

  • Must be a qualified professional / professional in training under supervision
  • Must supply own tools of work
  • Services that will be provided will be discussed with the VQ Volunteer Manager
Photographer
Shift time:As discussed with Volunteering QLD

We would love to capture the event with incredible images.

This role requires documenting the event by taking photos of guests, volunteers and entertainers (all with their permission). You must be an experienced photographer and supply your own camera equipment.

This role requires you to be confident, friendly and respectful when interacting with guests and volunteers. Homeless Connect volunteers will provide assistance with photo release forms.

Upon volunteering for this role you agree that all images and video captured by you on the day will be the property of Brisbane City Council and Volunteering Queensland.

Registered Nurse
Shift time:8:15am - 2:30pm

This role is to provide basic health checks to guests and to refer them to relevant free medical clinics. Nurses also encourage guests to seek further medical attention if required.

Other on-site medical service staff include podiatrists, dentists, optometrists, physios and general practitioners.

Please bring your own equipment.
